A Note on Handmade Variations
The piece shown is one of the currently available lidded jars. Because each jar is hand-thrown and hand-carved individually, yours will be unique with its own subtle variations in glaze tone and carved detail that make it entirely one of a kind. Available to pack as a gift just add your message at checkout and I'll include a handwritten gift note.

There's a kind of making that has its own history built in. This jar carries a piece of it.

Hand-thrown twice on the potter's wheel and hand-carved in my studio in Oranmore, Co. Galway, the double-walled Irish Cottage Lidded Jar is constructed from two walls pulled up separately and joined. The outer wall is the cottage  porcelain slip laid over the surface to build up the texture of lime-washed stone, windows carved clean through to reveal the inner wall behind. What looks like depth is depth. The two walls are real, the space between them real, the shadow that moves through the rectangular openings changing with whatever light the jar sits in.

Carved into that outer wall: an old cartwheel and calla lilies. The wheel is one of the quiet remnants of the rural west left leaning against a gable end, half-buried in a ditch, drawn into a gate pier to keep it from rotting entirely. It appears here carved in relief, beside lilies that climb as they do along every boreen in Connemara, indifferent to the stone. Both are painted in underglaze before firing, fixed into the surface at 1200°C.

The red door faces out. The colour is deliberate an old western tradition of painting the threshold red, marking the line between the domestic world and whatever came in from the road. Not decoration. Practice.

The upper body and lid carry the same dark metallic charcoal and bronze glaze, the colour of old thatch gone silver in persistent rain. Inside, glossy green with warm brown speckles. The double wall keeps the outside cool while the inside holds what it holds.

Every piece is hand-carved individually. The wheel on yours will have turned its own way.

Glaze Dark metallic charcoal and bronze on the upper body and lid  decorative, never in contact with food. Interior glazed in glossy green with warm brown speckles, food safe and lead-free throughout.

How It's Made Thrown from a single ball of clay split at the base on the wheel and drawn up into two walls, one inside the other, merged again at the top into a single rim. The outer wall is hand-carved with cottage windows, old cartwheel, and calla lily detail. Porcelain slip applied for the whitewashed walls; carved elements painted with underglaze. High-fired at 1200°C in my Oranmore studio.

Care The interior green glaze is fully dishwasher safe. To protect the metallic finish on the exterior and lid, hand washing is recommended for long-term care.
