Our Process
At Ceramics by Anne, each piece begins its journey as a lump of raw clay, transformed through a meticulous process into a work of art.
Our process starts with careful consideration of form and function. Inspired by the natural beauty and rich heritage of Ireland, we envision pieces that are not only beautiful but also tell a story. This initial concept guides the selection of clay and the techniques to be employed.
Once the design is finalized, the clay is prepared. We primarily use hand-throwing on the wheel, a technique that requires precision and a deep connection with the material. This method allows us to create unique, intricate forms, from delicate vases to sturdy bowls.
A particular fascination lies in creating double-walled pieces where the outer layer is carved and negative spaces are cut, such as in our Celtic knot vases. These intricate designs invite viewers to discover hidden details within each piece.
After the initial shaping, the pieces undergo a slow drying process to prevent cracking. This critical stage is followed by the first firing, known as the bisque firing, which hardens the clay and prepares it for glazing. Our unique pieces are often slow in the making, as we believe in the importance of each step.
We strive to bring our ceramic pieces to life, capturing the essence of Ireland's natural beauty and rich cultural heritage through every careful step.
Glazing and Final Firing
The next stage involves applying glazes, carefully chosen to enhance the form and texture of each piece. Our glazes are often inspired by the vibrant colors of the Irish landscape, from the deep greens of its fields to the blues of its coastal waters. We experiment with various glazes to achieve unique finishes that make each piece truly one-of-a-kind.
After glazing, the ceramics are fired again at higher temperatures in a process called glaze firing. This firing melts the glaze, bonding it to the clay and creating a durable, often glossy, finish. This step is crucial for achieving the desired aesthetic and functionality of the pieces.
Each creation undergoes a final inspection to ensure it meets our high standards of quality and artistry. This rigorous process guarantees that every piece from Ceramics by Anne is not just an object, but a testament to craftsmanship and passion.
It is an honor to share our process and the beauty of Irish-inspired ceramic art with you.
