The refectory of Ross Errilly Friary was where the Franciscan community gathered to eat, pray, and listen to scripture read aloud from the carved stone pulpit. Light fell through a row of tall Gothic windows along its walls and it's those windows, still standing after six centuries, that inspired this piece.
Abbey Design Candle Light Holders bring authentic medieval character to everyday spaces. The distinctive bottle shape with its narrow neck and broader carved body echoes the sturdy architecture of Ireland's great Franciscan ruins. But it's the windows that define this design: their tall, graceful arches carved in relief across the body of the piece, glowing with warm light when a tealight is placed inside.
This handcrafted Irish ceramic tealight holder captures the most evocative features of the refectory range: the expansive Gothic window arches with their hand-carved pointed detail, and the worn stone doorway that leads into the heart of the friary. Each piece is individually hand-carved, making yours truly one-of-a-kind just like the ancient walls that inspired it.
Key Features:
- Dimensions: 11 cm W × 16 cm H (perfect tabletop size)
- Hand thrown on a traditional potter's wheel for authentic craftsmanship
- Hand-carved stone and window details
- High-fired at 1200°C for exceptional strength and durability
Design Features:
- Gothic window arches: The centrepiece of this design sweeping hand-carved pointed arches inspired by the refectory's original windows. When lit, candlelight floods through each arch, casting long Gothic shadows across any surface. The effect is most dramatic in a darkened room.
- Hidden doorway detail: A narrow arched opening with carved step detail, capturing the quiet mystery of Ross Errilly's stone passages and worn thresholds.
- Weathered stone aesthetic: Coloured porcelain slip and embedded stones replicate the ancient texture of the friary walls, with hand-painted underglaze adding depth and character.
- Bronze glaze interior: Warm metallic glaze intensifies the candlelight, amplifying the golden glow that spills through the Gothic arches.
- Traditional craftsmanship: Hand-thrown, then individually carved and finished in my Oranmore studio, County Galway.
