How It's Made
Each piece is lovingly handcrafted using traditional pottery techniques:
- Comes in two pieces - a deep plate that sits perfectly inside the vessel
- Hand-thrown on the potter's wheel with careful attention to form
- Every detail is hand-carved and hand-painted
- Green coloured slip was applied to replicate the green plants clinging to cottage walls
- Real stones and shells were pressed into the clay to create authentic texture
- Finished with a beautiful metallic glaze that sparkles in sunlight or candlelight
- Durable and functional - fired at 1200°C (2192°F)
- Perfect for creating atmosphere or as a decorative statement piece
Imagine a turf fire glowing in an old traditional Irish cottage, and the cozy warmth it brings on a wild, windswept evening. This handcrafted oil burner captures that essence, designed to honor the deep connection with the old, simple way of life in rural Ireland - where harsh winds and weather shaped both landscape and soul.
As you wander the Irish countryside, you'll find them everywhere: abandoned cottage left behind, their reed roofs long gone, stone walls standing naked and exposed to the elements.
Each cottage tells a story of the people of Ireland, their traditions, and their history of occupation - resilient lives etched into every weathered stone.
The Story in Every Detail
The shimmering metallic glaze makes the piece look authentically old and weathered, as though it has stood against decades of Atlantic storms. I've painted the stones in vibrant colours because the light in Ireland is so beautiful - constantly shifting between rain and sun, creating luminous hues that dance across the landscape.
Notice the red stone around the door. This isn't just decoration - it stands as a guardian, painted in the traditional way to shield the threshold from wandering spirits and unwelcome ghosts.
Throughout Irish homes, humble objects from bygone days served as quiet reminders of that simpler, harder life, when every possession earned its place through use and necessity.
This oil burner honors the resilience of those who came before, keeping their memory alive in stone and in the deep red of protection.
